i know i complain a lot about how hot it is here.  and it actually makes me laugh when i hear people in austin talk about how hot it is there… because there is no way it is as bad as it is here.  the main reason is that we have no escape from the heat… EVER.  in the first world everyone drives around in their hybrid, air conditioned cars, to their desk jobs in the AC.  i have to sleep with a fan in order to not sweat all night.  i work in a school all day with power about half of the time that runs the fans.  and i drive around in negrita, as wonderful as she is, without AC.  i promise i’m not asking for a pity party, or trying to toot my own horn about how cool i am.  this is supposed to be funny. so i’ll get to the point.

you are all going to think i’m a big hypocrite for the above, when you hear this next statement.  i had an AC in my room.  i promise didn’t use it.  the truth is that it would use too much electricity and burn up our little invertor that has just two small batteries for when the power goes out here.  i prefer a fan all night to an AC for about 10 minutes, or i would seriously use it.

so here’s the funny part.  rafeal, our dueño (owner, landlord), wanted to take the AC unit out because he knew i hadn’t been and wouldn’t be using it.  and this is one thing i haven’t quite figured out about dominican culture… the time at which people decide they are going to do something.  it always seems so random to me.  we’ve lived in the new apartment now for four months.  rafeal and i talked about him taking out the AC unit when we moved him, but he decided he was going to take it out around 2 in the afternoon the other day.  so he came inside, pulled it out, and left dust and concrete shavings all over my newly mopped floor.  i was a little perturbed, but he worst part was that i then had a huge hole in my wall where it had been.  naturally i asked, “are you going to put something there?”  he assured me he would.  the picture below shows what i ended up with.  i piece of wood that hardly covered the hole.  and now i have  few lizards that have come in to my room.  but i leave them in peace, because i hope that they eat the mosquitoes.

there is a new school building!  colegio makarios is scheduled to open september 21st new and improved, with two new classes and an actual work space for the teachers. i remember when i got here in the summer of 2007 thinking that there was still a lot of work to be done on the makarios school, but this year it seems like that have just as much done and it’s only mid july.

recently i took a trip back to austin to visit my family.  six months is the longest duration of time that i have spent here without a beak, so even though it was short it was worth it to see my family that i rarely see.  i’m sorry if i missed you this trip, but i tried to spend as much time with family as possible.  my dad’s brother and his kids were in from atlanta, my brother made a surprise trip in to see me off of his tour, my grandma neva and her husband came down from missouri, and we spent time with my grandpa in austin.  i don’t remember the last time i got to see all the welches or when the next time i might be able to see them, so it was a priceless time together.
