my life songs

to continue with our inspiring people series…

wendy invited me to go with her and her son to the fortaleza the other day.  it was my first time to ever go inside…. pretty cool to see where the founder of the dominican republic was held in prison.

this was a picture from our trip!

wendy is the woman that cleans our house.  anne marie, kendall, and i pay her 700 pesos ($20) a day.  she comes once a week.  she has several jobs like this… a couple houses she cleans, and she does peoples’ nails on the side to have a little extra ($4 per pedicure).  wendy has 8 children, 5 that live with her, and 3 in the states.  she does and provides EVERYTHING for the 5 that live with her.  she the bread winner for her family, and gets her kids ready for school every day, buys their school supplies, washes all their clothes, and with her several jobs she somehow manages to keep her house clean as well.  she does all of this without a washing machine or refrigerator in her house.  imagine… and i know this is hard… because in america we do everything to make things the most convenient for us as possible… imagine taking care of your 5 kids without a washing machine or refrigerator.

it’s really hard to find people people you can trust in this country to do work for you… especially in your house.  i met wendy because she is my friend benjanmin’s half sister.  she is not only trustworthy, but also really lights up our house.  she likes to leave all the doors open when she cleans, which kinda drives me crazy because of the mosquitoes.  and she likes to move things around also.  all sounds really annoying… but it’s the kind of things you just put up with… because she’s just wendy.  she walks in the house when she wants like it’s hers, but i love having her around because it feels like family.  she always telling me to eat more… she just can’t help being a mama.

wendy is not a christian.  but she’s the kind of person you have so much hope for.  she works hard, has dreams, and is a great mama to her kids.  we’ve talked about why she doesn’t go to church.  i pray for wendy, like many others in the country, that the strongholds of the culture would not bind her, and that she could find freedom in christ.

wendy inspires me because she has so many reasons in her life to be depressed, complain, and feel sorry for herself, but she does just the opposite of that.  every time she sees me she shouts my name and always has some positive thing to say.  she’s the kind of person you just want to help… she makes your efforts with it.

one of the other things wendy has done around our house is… she brought plants!  and she yells at me every day if i don’t water them.

here are some of her creations:

this one is/will be an orchid.

wendy has a dream of owning her own vivero (nursery).  i hope she does one day.
